The most important piece of advice we can give you at this stage is that, if
you use the Internet, then it is absolutely essential, for everyone, that you
have at least three pieces of Software on your PC.
The necessity of the first item in the above list is pretty obvious and well-documented. Nearly every week, a virus is on the News, however there are far more viruses found than most people are aware. Also, as well as having Anti-Virus Software, is the necessity to keep the virus definitions up to date. The virus definitions are the "signatures" by which the virus' are known. They are what the Anti-Virus Software uses to locate the virus. Most Anti-Virus Software will update the virus definitions automatically, if configured correctly. (Please Refer to the Documentation (Hints) section for more information, under the sub-heading "Anti-Virus Configuration"). The necessity of the second item in the above list is less obvious and much less-documented. We have had a lot of Clients tell us that they don't need Firewall Software, as they have nothing worth stealing. The problem is that some people will steal or vandalise a rubbish bin if it isn't protected and it's the same on your PC; you may not think the data (information) on your PC is worth stealing, but someone else (a "hacker") may think it is worth stealing or vandalising. And if the rubbish bin isn't there when you need it, it's a major inconvenience, at the least. A lot of private investigators and paparazzi find out an amazing amount of information from rubbish bins. Just ask any Celebrity! The most effective way of preventing this is via Firewall Software. There are a lot of very good, free Firewalls available and these are sufficient for most casual, Home Internet users. For the Business user or for the Home user looking for a bit more Security or Privacy, HolTech Services can provide an enhanced Firewall or combined Anti-Virus and Firewall software package. The third item in the above list is relatively new and whilst mainly annoying in nature, it can be quite expensive to remove Spyware or Adware, once the problem becomes very bad. As for Anti-Virus Software, it is also necessary to keep the spyware definitions up to date. Again, the spyware definitions are the "signatures" by which the spyware is known. They are what the Anti-Spyware Software uses to locate the spyware. With Anti-Spyware Software, only the "non-free" software will update the spyware definitions automatically. There are quite a few free Anti-Spyware packages available, but you must be sure your choice is a reputable one before downloading it, as some Spyware purports to be an Anti-Spyware package, you download it and then your infected! Then again, some spyware claims that certain Anti-Spyware packages are in fact spyware in disguise, which is untrue. They play dirty, so beware. For the Business user or for the Home user looking for even more Security or Privacy, HolTech Services can provide an enhanced Firewall or combined Anti-Virus, Firewall and Anti-Spyware Software packages.
