To install or update the Drivers for a piece of Hardware, we need to go to
"Control Panel". This can usually be accessed through "My Computer", although
there are other ways to get to it.
Once in Control Panel, we open an item called "System" and then go to the
"Device Manager".
In Device Manager, we will see a list of devices contained in or attached to,
the PC.
The "plus sign (+)", specifies an expandable sub-list. Clicking on the + sign,
will expand the item and change the +_sign to a -_sign. The "minus sign (-)",
specifies an collapsible sub-list.
Each sub-list specifies a particular sub-item of the item specified in the
list.
For example, under the sub-list item "Display Adapters", we may find a sub-item
"Asus V9280S2 V56.72", which is a video (or graphics) card, with a brand name
of Asus, a Model # of V9280S2 and a Driver version of 56.72.
By highlighting the sub-item above and clicking on Properties (or
right-clicking and choosing Properties), we can see even more details.
By clicking on the Drivers tab, we can see the "Update Driver" button, which
will take us through the process of updating the Driver, via an Upgrade Device
Driver Wizard. Follow the instructions specified and note that initially you
should allow the Wizard to search for the Driver automatically, only changing
this if it fails to successfully find a new, suitable Driver.
Always be sure to carefully read and follow the instructions specified on each
page of the Wizard. Keep clicking "Next" until "Finish" appears to replace
"Next" or until you need to "Cancel" out of the Wizard.
Remember that it is far better to Cancel out of the Wizard and not update the
Driver than it is to install an incorrect Driver for a Device. Trust the
Wizard, as it knows from internal software instructions whether or not the
Driver is suitable for a particular Device.
If the new Driver is on a removable device, such as a Floppy Disk Drive (FDD)
or a CD-ROM, specify this on the "Locate Driver Files" page or by pressing the
"Have Disk" button.
